FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Today we celebrate the great feast of the Assumption of Mary. We remember with joy that the mother of our Lord was taken up into heaven in body and soul. The Assumption of Mary into heaven shows us what God has planned for us. He will make our bodies perfect and beautiful. God wants us all to live with him in body and soul. God loves our body. Christ has not come just to redeem our soul. He died and is risen to redeem soul and body.

GOSPEL: LUKE 1: 39 – 56

Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; y spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.” Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home

FR MAREK SABBATICAL LEAVE

After working in the Diocese of Dundee for 15 years, Fr Marek will be going on a mini sabbatical at the end of August 2025 and will return in mid-January 2026. During this time, he will attend some courses and retreats. Fr Musa will be acting priest-in-charge during the time Fr Marek is away.

19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. CYCLE C 

Jesus called his group of disciples ‘a little flock’. Let us look at our congregation, as we have gathered here today for our Sunday Mass. Are we a large flock or a small one? What really matters is not the size of the flock but the attitude we have. Jesus says,” Do not be afraid, little flock, for it has pleased the Father to give you the kingdom.”

GOSPEL – Luke 12 35 – 40

Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have the servants recline at the table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

18th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. CYCLE C

INTRODUCTION:

We have come together to praise God. Today, we particularly want to praise God for the many things he allows us to use as our possessions. The fields and their fruit, the animals, and the things that our hands can make, the clothes we wear, our houses, our provisions, and everything we have.

GOSPEL – LUKE 12: 13 – 21

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”

HOW CAN WE ENTER HEAVEN?
(Part two)

INDULGENCE CAN BE

Partial – we can obtain it many times per day. For example, when we pray, when we do work of charity, or faithfully do our duty.

It can be compared to any small snacks we eat during the day when we are hungry and to sustain our energy until evening.

Plenary – we can obtain it only once per day and only if we fulfil the required conditions of:

Confession (within a week), Holy Communion on that day, Pray for intentions of Pope and be completely detached from any sin (we need to be ready to leave behind or fight with all sins, not keeping some as our favourite sins to which we cling).
It can be compared to the full meal we need each day to sustain our bodies. We need this indulgence for our soul.

In this journey to Heaven, we are not alone. We are supported by our Guardian Angels, Patron Saints, and all Angels and Saints. We need to be friends with them, learn about their life, and learn which Saint is the patron of our particular needs and pray for their intercession.

17th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. CYCLE C 

INTRODUCTION:

We have to come together on this Sunday, because we are God’s people. He knows us, and we know him. He speaks to us and we speak to him. And yet, we are like the apostles. We ask again and again: Lord, teach us how to pray, teach us how to speak to you. We want to learn more about the ways in which we can pray.

GOSPEL – LUKE 11: 1 – 13

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.” And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,’ and he says in reply from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. “And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

INTRODUCTION:

How does one welcome a friend? We all know what to do. There are many ways to show somebody that we welcome them as a friend. But what do we do if it’s not just anybody who comes to us, but God himself? How does one welcome God? We who are gathered here this morning have actually gathered here for this very purpose: to welcome God

GOSPEL: LUKE 10: 38 – 42

Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken from her.”

HOW CAN WE ENTER HEAVEN?
(Part one)

After Baptism we have 3 different states of our soul (spirt):

1. State of Grace. God’s grace is fully with us; we are in communion with Saints and Angels.
2. State of venial (daily) sin. We are still united with God, but the bond is not that strong, and our vision is very blurry, we don’t see clearly.
3. State of mortal sin. Our union with God is broken, we can’t see Him. The longer we stay in this state, the greater our distance from God grows.

How do we fix this?

Confession is not enough. This is because every sin has two consequences in our life:

1. Guilt of the sin. (We are guilty of our wrong actions). The remedy for this is confession. Confession saves us from hell.
2. Temporal punishment (this is like the “search history” in electronical devices). The remedy for this is an indulgence. An indulgence saves us from purgatory.

Confession and indulgence are both equally important for us to get to heaven. Each is responsible for different steps for getting there. It is important to remember that indulgence can be obtained only after absolution received in Sacrament of confession
