30^th Sunday of the Year CYCLE C

INTRODUCTION

When we look at our congregation, we sometimes feel proud of it and sometimes sad about it. We feel proud when the church is full and people are dressed well and the singing is lively. God looks at us in a different way; he is not deceived by outward appearances. He looks for different things. He looks at the inner spirit of our community, at the real, innermost aim we have when we come to him.

GOSPEL – Luke 18 9 – 14

Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity — greedy, dishonest, adulterous — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Fr. Tyrone, we pray that you will be inspired by the Holy Spirit during this mission, and that we, in turn, will have our faith deepen, experience spiritual renewal, and become true disciples of Jesus Christ

29th Sunday of the Year CYCLE C

INTRODUCTION

God’s people are a prayerful people. Our congregation today is a gathering of people who pray. The importance of prayer is revealed in our Gospel reading today, where we will hear the message: “God will see justice done to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night, even when he delays to help them.” Are we among the chosen ones of God, who call on him day and night?

GOSPEL – Luke 18: 1 – 8

Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.'” The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

28th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR: CYCLE C 

INTRODUCTION

When people give you a lot of help, what do you do? You don’t just say a quick thank you, but instead you visit them and thank them properly, or you send them a little gift. You try and show them as clearly as possible how grateful you are for their help. It is for this reason that we have come together today. We want to thank God and show him how grateful we are for what he has done for us. A good way of showing your gratitude to God is to ask him for forgiveness for all those times when we were ungrateful to him.

GOSPEL – Luke 17 11 – 19

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going, they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

27th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR: CYCLE 

INTRODUCTION

What brought us together this morning is
our faith. Each one of us has joined this community because of our faith in Jesus Christ. But although we already have faith, there are still many questions in our minds regarding our faith. How should faith be
visible in our daily lives? What does faith mean when we are in difficulties? How can we grow in faith? During our mass today we will reflect on these questions about our faith.

GOSPEL – Luke 17: 5 – 10

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at the table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were

obliged to do.'”.

26th SUNDAY OF THE YEAR: CYCLE C 

It is very enjoyable to come together and share God’s meal. Although every meal should be enjoyable and something beautiful, it can also become something ugly. If we become ugly, there is no sharing, no love. We read today of such a story, a story of an ugly meal. The meal of the rich man who ignored the poor Lazarus standing at his gate. As we are about to approach the table of the Lord, to receive the food that comes from God, we promise God that we will not close our eyes to those in need. We also ask for forgiveness for our failure in the past.

GOSPEL – Luke 16: 19 – 31

Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’ Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’ He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.’ But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'”
