FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT CYCLE A

INTRODUCTION:

Today we celebrate the feast day of All Saints. It is a great feast for our whole Christian community. We In this time of advent, we are watching and waiting or the saviour who can bring unity between the nations and among ourselves. Such unity seems impossible. And yet today we receive the message which proclaims to us: ‘Peace is possible – it is close at hand.’

GOSPEL – Mathew 3: 1 – 12

John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at and! “It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

INTRODUCTION:

Today we celebrate the feast day of All Saints. It is a great feast for our whole Christian community. We remember with joy the countless multitudes of men and women, boys and girls who have gone before us to God. In our celebration today, the Lord tells us f what kind of person a saint is and what people must do to become saints. There are the humble ones, the poor, the gentle, those who suffer, those who make peace, those with a pure heart and those that suffered because they stood up against evil and injustice.

GOSPEL – Mathew 5: 1 – 12 A

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

CATECHISM OUTING

It will be on the 12th of November to Spionkop Dam. It will cost R150 per child, this will include transport, a food pack & the entrance fee. Parents, please pay as soon as possible to secure transport. All children are to bring a signed indemnity form. Please contact Sandra on 0799225566 or the Parish Secretary with any questions. THIRTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR CYCLE C

INTRODUCTION:

When we look at our congregation we sometimes feel proud of it and sometimes sad about it. We feel proud when the church is full and people are dressed well and the singing is lively. God looks at us in a different way, he is not deceived by outward appearances. He looks for different things. He looks at the inner spirit of our community, at the real, innermost aim we have when we come to him.

GOSPEL – Luke 18: 9 – 14

Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity — greedy, dishonest, adulterous — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for the Catholic Church throughout the world to publicly renew its commitment to the missionary movement, coordinated by the Pontifical Mission Societies, who are also known as Missio.
In October the second collection is for PMS.

TWENTY-EIGHT SUNDAY OF THE YEAR CYCLE C

INTRODUCTION:

When people give you a lot of help, what do you do? You don’t just say a quick thank you, but instead, you visit them and thank them properly or you send them a little gift. You try and show them as clearly as possible how grateful you are for their help. It is for this reason that we have come together today. We want to thank God and show him how grateful we are for what he has done for us. A good way of showing your gratitude to God is to ask him for forgiveness for all those times when we were ungrateful to him.

GOSPEL – Luke 17: 11 – 19

As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” And when he saw them, he said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”

TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR CYCLE C

INTRODUCTION:

What brought us together this morning is our faith. Each one of us has joined this community because of our faith in Jesus Christ. But although we already have faith, there are still many questions in our minds regarding our faith. How should faith be visible in our daily lives? What does faith mean when we are in difficulties? How can we grow in faith? During our mass today we will reflect on these questions about our faith.

GOSPEL – Luke 17: 5 – 10

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”
The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree,
‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'”
