SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT YEAR C

INTRODUCTION:

‘There is no way’ people say. ‘Prepare the way’ is Gods reply. ‘There is no way of improving life in this area’ people say. Then prepare a way, make a way is God’s reply. ‘There is no way of making people friendlier’, we say. ‘There is no way of making marriages happier, of finding work for the many unemployed, of securing just laws for our country.’ If there is no way, then make a way, is the message of this second Sunday of Advent: ‘Prepare a way for the Lord.’

GOSPEL: LUKE 3: 1 – 6

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

THE NEW LITURGICAL YEAR IS 2025 JUBILEE YEAR

This year’s theme is Pilgrims of Hope, chosen to promote peacebuilding in a world threatened by climate change and ongoing wars.

The official logo of the Jubilee Year 2025 depicts

  • humanity coming from the four corners of the Earth,
  • in the act of clinging to the Cross.
  • The cross is in the shape of a sail, one of the signs of Christian Hope that carries with it the certainty of the victory of good over evil. A sail that imposes itself on the sea moved by the happenings of life.
  • The cross ends in the shape of an anchor, another symbol of hope that brings confidence and security in life.
