22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

INTRODUCTION:

All societies and nations have their own customs and traditions. It sometimes happens, however, that people maintain customary practices without understanding them. Some will keep the most unimportant customs very faithful. The really important traditions, however, are often ignored if people do not like them or find them too difficult to maintain. This problem can occur in our church community. We too have traditions and customs and in the same way, it can happen that we keep the unimportant customs very faithfully. There is also a danger that we give pride of place to the traditions of our society and not to those of God. We are reminded of this when Christ says “You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human tradition.”

GOSPEL: MARK 7: 1 – 8; 14 – 15; 21 – 23

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. —For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace, they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?” He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person, but the things that come out from within are what defile. “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.”

Due to late booking at Ngome, we were unable to have a full weekend pilgrimage as we did last year. We have a list on the porch for those who are interested in going on a day pilgrimage. The suggested date is 30 November 2024. If you would like to go, please put your name on the list, because only then can we arrange for transport.

21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

INTRODUCTION:

There are people who say: ‘The teaching of Christ and his church are too hard. We cannot keep all the demands of the Gospel. After all, times have changed. We have different ideas today about life, money, sex, marriage and many other things. We cannot follow the Christian way of life.’ The same thing happened even in Christ’s lifetime. People found his teaching too difficult and many followers left him. Do you want to leave him too?

GOSPEL: JOHN 6: 60 – 69

Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said,
“This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and Life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the ones who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason, I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.” As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

INTRODUCTION:

Today we celebrate the great feast of the Assumption of Mary. We remember with joy that the mother of our Lord was taken up into heaven in body and soul. The Assumption of Mary into heaven shows us what God has planned for us. He will make our bodies perfect and beautiful. God wants us all to live with him in body and soul. God loves our bodies. Christ has not come just to redeem our souls. He died and is risen to redeem soul and body.

GOSPEL: LUKE 1: 39 – 56

Mary set out and travelled to the hill country in haste to the town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leapt for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; y spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.” Mary remained with her for about three months and then returned to her home.

19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

INTRODUCTION:

Our lives are rather like a long, long journey over mountains and hills. Sometimes the road is easy and sometimes the road is difficult. On every journey, we need food, bread and drink. Without food and water, we would die on the way, so if we are going on a long journey, we prepare our provisions. In our celebration today, Christ offers us his provision for our journey through life. He tells us, “I am the living bread”. Christ gives us hope when we have lost hope, Christ strengthens us when we are weak. Christ shows us the aim of our journey when we walk through darkness and despair. Therefore, he says: “I am the living bread.”

GOSPEL: JOHN 6: 41 – 51

The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven, “and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

INTRODUCTION:

There are people who say: ‘Why should I go to church and wait for heaven. I am hungry now. I am oppressed now. The church should join us in our struggle against injustice and help us to fill our bellies!’ In our celebration today we shall hear of such people who only demanded food from God. Sure enough, he gave them food. He created many things for his people, and he saw that it was good. However, God offers still more. A happy life is not only food and drink. In our celebration today Jesus advises us, “do not work for food that cannot last.”

GOSPEL: JOHN 6: 24 – 35

When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God that you believe in the one he sent.” So they said to him, “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
