FEAST OF ALL SAINTS

INTRODUCTION

Today we celebrate the feast day of All Saints. It is a great feast for our whole Christian community. We remember with joy the countless multitudes of men and women, boys and girls who have gone before us to God. In our celebration today, the Lord tells us what kind of person a saint is and what people must do to become saints. There are the humble ones, the poor, the gentle, those who suffer, those who make peace, those with a pure heart, and those who suffered because they stood up against evil and injustice.

GOSPEL – Mathew 5 1 – 12 A

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

Fr Tony Hardiman OFM went home peacefully to God on Thursday,23 October. He was 88 years old. Born and raised in Athlone, he joined the friars in 1956 and was ordained in 1964. He spent his priestly ministry as a Franciscan missionary in South Africa and was parish priest at Steadville and Ezakheni.
