SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT YEAR C 

INTRODUCTION:

‘There is no way’ people say. ‘Prepare the way’ is Gods reply. ‘There is no way of improving life in this area’ people say. Then prepare a way, make a way is God’s reply. ‘There is no way of making people friendlier’, we say. ‘There is no way of making marriages happier, of finding work for the many unemployed, of securing just laws for our country.’ If there is no way, then make a way, is the message of this second Sunday of Advent: ‘Prepare a way for the Lord.’

GOSPEL: LUKE 3: 1 – 6

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT YEAR C 

INTRODUCTION:

There will be honesty in the land; there will be integrity in the land. What a daring promise this sounds to us because in reality, it is quite different. When listening to people talking, we hear them say, there is no honesty, you are cheated everywhere, and you cannot trust anyone. He will practice honesty and integrity. This is the powerful message of today. You will see the Son of Man in a cloud with power and great glory. Creation will be renewed, is the message of Advent.

GOSPEL: LUKE 21: 25-28 / 34 – 36

Jesus said to his disciples: “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”

SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

INTRODUCTION:

If you have a really good friend, you will be anxious to ensure that your friendship lasts forever. If you truly love your wife or husband, you want your love bond to last forever. Some of these thoughts come into our minds in these last few Sundays of the church year. When we look to the future we think about the end of the world and we read about frightening events. This is the time to which we, as Christians, look forward with anxiety, saying: if only our friendship with Christ will last… never mind what else happens. If only our union with Christ lasts forever.

GOSPEL: JOHN 18 -33B -37

Pilate said to Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?” Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here.” So, Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”

32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

INTRODUCTION:

There are many ways in which we can help others. We can give them money for food. We can also give them our time. Some give up their time to teach catechism, others visit the sick or serve on parish councils. Others give their talents to the community by serving in ministries. All who give their time in serving others give something of themselves. They share their love, their faith and their talents. If we want to be like Christ, we have to give ourselves to others. Today we remember how Christ gave himself in the most radical way. He gave all he processes, his life, his love his body and his blood.

GOSPEL: MARK 12: 38 – 44

In the course of his teaching, Jesus said to the crowds, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honour in synagogues, and places of honour at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”
