22nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. YEAR A

INTRODUCTION

We have gathered for worship this Sunday in order to give thanks to God for inviting us to the faith. But there is a question we should ask ourselves: would we have joined the church if we knew that our membership would bring us joy as well as suffering? If we were told today that we would have to suffer for the sake of our faith, what would we do?

GOSPEL READING
MATTHEW 16: 21 – 27

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

NB: The Pilgrim statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary will continue visiting homes for as long as there are people who want to take her home, even for a second or third time.

ORDER YOUR OWN STATUE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Please be mindful of the designated parking for persons with disabilities.

THE GREAT AMEN

• Why is it in BIG BOLD letters?
• Why do we SING it?

The Great Amen comes in at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer & it is the congregation’s only participation in that prayer.
It is a proclamation of our faith and praise.

Meaning and Significance

  • The “Yes” to God: The Hebrew word Amen translates to “truly,” “so be it,” or “I believe”.
  • Seal of the Prayer: It acts as the people’s active assent and seal on the entire Eucharistic Prayer offered by the priest.
  • Active Participation: It is considered the most important verbal response for the lay faithful during the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
  • Heavenly Union: It unites the gathered community with the worship of heaven, the angels, and the saints.

NOW YOU KNOW.
