11th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

INTRODUCTION:

A Small seed is a wonder of nature. It is scarcely visible in your hand and yet it has the potential to grow into a mighty tree, complete with roots, trunk, branches and leaves. What an amazing thought: the power of life hidden in a little seed. The tiny seed of God’s kingdom is Christ himself. We hear today how powerful this seed is. It will grow and grow, penetrating the whole world. It will grow into a mighty tree under which all nations will find a home. Christ’s message today gives us hope that the world will not end in disaster. The seed of the kingdom is too strong and cannot be destroyed.

GOSPEL: MARK 4: 26-34

Jesus said to the crowds: “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.” He said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” With many such parables, he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it. Without parables, he did not speak to them, but to his disciples, he explained everything in private.

REFLECTION BY BR CEBO

The Parable of the Growing Seed teaches that the Kingdom of God grows in ways that are often hidden and mysterious, independent of human efforts. It encourages believers to trust that God is at work even when we cannot see it.
The Parable of the Mustard Seed highlights how God’s Kingdom starts from small, seemingly insignificant beginnings but grows into something magnificent and expansive. This teaches that no act of faith or service is too small to be important.
Both parables call for patience and faith in the gradual and sometimes imperceptible growth of God’s work in the world and in our lives. Believers are encouraged to be patient and to trust in the divine process.
Overall, these parables reassure Christians that God’s Kingdom will grow and flourish in His own time and way and that their faith and small contributions are valuable parts of this divine plan.

TONGAAT FLOOD RELIEF

Thank you to all who responded. A bakkie load of goods was delivered to the Ramakrishna Centre on Tuesday, they will sort and deliver the items to Tongaat.
The SVDP were also very generous, thank you, we will continue collections until next Sunday. They need non-perishables, clothing household items (declutter your cupboards).
